March Newsletter: Signs of Spring at the Intervale Center

Signs of Spring at Intervale Center
Spring is ramping up at the Intervale Center, bringing with it the return of busy fields, seasonal crew members, and community connections. Across Vermont's farms, land, and people, the growing season is beginning to take shape – and we’re excited to share updates from our work and ways you can get involved.

Farms

The first onion sprouts of the 2026 growing season begin peeking out of the soil in the IC Greenhouse.
From crop planning to financial support, the Intervale Center Farm Business Services team is hard at work behind the scenes helping farms set up for a successful season ahead.

The Farm & Forestry Operations Security Special Fund (S.60) is headed to Governor Scott's desk after passing the legislature with unanimous support! Please call Governor Scott (802-828-333) and ask him to sign S.60 and support this critical legislation.

The People’s Farm is seeking 2026 Crew Members!

The People's Farm is the Intervale Center's volunteer-powered farm that provides fresh produce to our community and is a welcoming space to learn about agricultural processes – no farming experience necessary!

Volunteers support the growth of produce that is distributed to the community through our free, CSA-style produce pick-up, Fair Share.

The People's Farm Crew is a group of dedicated Intervale Center volunteers who help tend to the farm every Monday from 8am -12pm, May through October. In exchange for their time, Crew Members can take home veggies and pick up a weekly Fair Share.

Brooke Fleischman, Intervale Conservation Nursery Seed Coordinator, waters newly seeded trees and shrubs during a staff volunteer day in the Greenhouse.
The Intervale Conservation Nursery (ICN) is gearing up for the season, with spring harvest and seed collection just around the corner!

Intervale staff members joined the ICN crew for a big round of seeding – always a hopeful sign of spring.

We’re also excited to welcome four seasonal staff members back to the ICN team, all returning for their second or third year. Their experience and familiarity bring so much strength to the season ahead.

Duncan Murdoch, Natural Areas Stewardship Coordinator, prepares for Spring by pruning and removing tree limbs.
The Intervale Center Lands Team is preparing for the trails to turn green again! They are busy removing dangerous tree limbs, cutting back invasive Buckthorn shrubs, working on continuous restoration projects, and so much more!

Intervale trails remain open 24/7, but spring conditions mean they can be a bit muddy – come prepared 🥾
