Lucie Lehmann
Lucie Lehmann is a lifelong naturalist and environmentalist. For many years she lived on a 150 acre conserved farm in Maryland, where she and her husband converted his family’s historic dairy farm into the nation’s first commercial nursery for growing plants for green roofs. They were recognized at the state and local level for their conservation and stewardship work and were named Champions of the Chesapeake in 2015 for their efforts to decrease runoff and improve water quality on their farm, which contained important streams in that watershed.
Lucie spent much of her career in the public sector, holding senior positions at the federal, state and local government levels, including Senior Policy Advisor for Government Affairs at the State Department during the first term of the Clinton administration; State Director for U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski of Maryland; and Director of Government Relations for Harford County, Maryland. She also co-chaired the Agriculture transition team for Governor Martin O’Malley, writing the bulk of his agriculture blueprint, which created, among other things, new opportunities for small and organic farmers in the state.
After retirement she moved to Vermont to be closer to her sister, who has lived here for decades. Lucie is the author of two books and has been a longtime freelancer writer. She earned a Master of Public Administration degree from Harvard University, a Master of Arts in Writing from Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Vassar College. She has served on numerous boards over the course of thirty years and is currently the Vice President of the Green Mountain Audubon Society. She lives in South Burlington, where she has converted most of her lawn into a native garden.
