At Root to Rise Farm in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, Lizzie and Tom Wemyss manage 100 acres with a focus on caring for the land while producing food for their community.
Their predominantly women-powered team rotationally grazes Highland cattle, chickens, pigs, turkeys, and laying hens while also growing vegetables and flowers and operating a sourdough microbakery. Moving the animals through the farm’s pastures gives the land time to recover while supporting soil health and nutrient cycling, nourishing the land at the foundation of our food system.
