Press Release: Spring Native Tree Harvest
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Burlington, VT — Spring is in full swing at The Intervale Conservation Nursery (ICN) as we prepare to harvest 27,000 native trees and shrubs to be planted along Vermont’s waterways. With each tree, we are growing important habitat and improving water quality for our rivers and streams. This spring harvest will go straight to conservation projects across Vermont that are most in need of riparian habitat development.
At the Intervale Center, we protect and steward the natural environment as the foundation of our food system. Planting trees enhances water quality, reduces flood impacts, and creates homes for wildlife and important pollinator species. Since 2001, our Intervale Conservation Nursery has planted over 487,000 trees — about 2,000 acres of new forest!
This year, we will lead plantings at 18 conservation sites in our state. We partner with US Fish and Wildlife Service, Friends of the Winooski River, Franklin County Natural Resources Conservation District, and private landowners to identify project sites for the greatest ecosystem benefits. We are grateful to have our work supported by the Lake Champlain Basin Program and other generous funders.
Now through Mother’s Day, for anyone who donates a gift of $40 or more, we will plant one of our native trees in honor of them or a loved one. Donors can give a gift that grows at intervale.org/donate.
Any businesses or individuals that are interested in purchasing native trees and shrubs for spring planting projects can contact Ben Rodgers, Intervale Conservation Nursery’s Sales Manager, at benr@intervale.org.
