Bringing Food Security to All Vermonters

In 2023, the Intervale Center acted as a lead organization in the research and writing of Vermont Farm-to-Plate's Vermont Food Security Roadmap, which launched at the end of January. The Roadmap is a collective effort of the Farm to Plate Network, researchers, partner organizations, and Vermonters who contributed their personal expertise and experience regarding food security. Development of the Roadmap took place over 24 months and involved over 600 people.

By bringing together hunger relief, farm viability, and climate readiness into one plan, the plan seeks to not only address root causes, but also create a pathway to food security for all Vermonters.  With this roadmap in hand, Vermont now has the tools, knowledge, and resources to create food security and ensure that every person living here has the food they want and need to be healthy and nourished. The plan can advance long-term, equitable, food security and food access for all of Vermont’s residents, not only today, but in times of crisis, regardless of their life circumstances. This plan investigates issues related to affordable housing, health care, transportation, siting of retail grocery stores, food distribution, and ensuring the continued production of food in Vermont.

The Intervale Center anticipates having an ongoing role as an organization that works across these areas, delivering programming that builds food production capacity, takes care of our natural environment, feeds people, and strengthens the movement for community food systems. During the 2024 legislative session, we will be advocating for the state to adopt policies, procedures, and plans to ensure that the Vermont food supply is sufficient to withstand global or national food supply chain disruptions caused by climate change and other disasters.
