Explore the Intervale
The Intervale is open to the public 365 days a year. Our recreational trails wind along the Winooski River all the way to the Ethan Allen Homestead. They are perfect for biking, birding, walking, jogging, and skiing in the winter.
When weather permits, we groom 3 miles of cross-country ski trails for both classic and skate skiers. These trails are 100% supported by our community and people like you – please donate to support their maintenance! Get current ski conditions here.
Intervale Road/Trail is part of Cycle the City, a self-guided loop that winds through Burlington along the bike path, through the Ethan Allen Homestead, through the farmfields and trails of the Intervale Center, and up to the University of Vermont and downtown Burlington.
The Intervale Center attracts hundreds of birders every year who come to enjoy the wide diversity of species that inhabit this unique floodplain. Wind your way along the Winooski River on the Rena Calkins trail to see Mallards and Common Mergansers, head to the farm fields for Red-tailed Hawk and Peregrine Falcon sightings, or check out the wooded areas for kinglets, warblers, woodpeckers and more.
We welcome you to take a stroll or jog along our trails and roads. Enjoy the scenery! Stop by the information kiosk outside the Intervale Center’s offices to orient yourself. There are two public parking lots off of Intervale Road, or you can park in our lot across the street from Gardener’s Supply. We encourage you not to leave valuables in your car!
Tommy Thompson Community Gardens, managed by Burlington Parks, Recreation and Waterfront, is the largest community garden in Burlington with 150 plots and over 300 gardeners. Click here to learn more and become a community gardener in the Intervale!
The Winooski River Watershed contains some of the most appealing landscapes of Vermont. You can paddle from Winooski, through the Intervale, all the way to Lake Champlain! Our friends at Friends of the Winooski have some great resources here.
