Join us for Burlington Green Drinks, co-sponsored by City Market and the Burlington Food Council, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m at Main Street Landing.
Burlington Green Drinks is a social-networking event set on the last Tuesday of every month in the Main Street Landing Building. The first 125 pints of delicious Wolaver's Organic Ales are provided at no cost.
Attend the Farm-to-Plate meeting, 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. at the Black Box Theater, Main Street Landing.
How can Vermont build strong local food systems, create jobs in the food and farm economy, and improve access to healthy local food? The Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund has laid out an impressive road map for the next 10 years of agricultural development with January’s release of the Farm-to-Plate Strategic Plan.
Kit Perkins, project manager of the Initiative, will lead this presentation to discuss the findings of the Initiative’s exhaustive 18-month research project. She’ll present their strategies to increase jobs and enterprises in the farm and food sector and ramp up local food production and consumption in Vermont and regions beyond our borders. Get a sneak peak at the plan’s Executive Summary. This presentation is co-sponsored by the Intervale Center, City Market and the Burlington Food Council.

Saturday, October 16th, 10am-1pm: discussion & volunteer opportunity for an invasive plant removal work day at the Intervale Center!
Please join the Intervale Center and Vermont Land Trust on Saturday, October 16th, 10:00a.m.-1:00p.m. for an invasive plant removal work day at the Intervale Center. The Intervale Center owns or manages more than 350 acres of farmland, wetlands, and riparian forests. Invasive plants can out-compete native plants for water and nutrients, changing the composition of our native forests. Join us to work on removing invasive buckthorn, to keep our riparian forests healthy. We’ll start our day with a discussion of the Intervale Center’s forest communities and their significance with Liz Thompson, Director of Conservation Science at Vermont Land Trust. Then we’ll use hand tools to cut and remove invasive plants. Please bring a bag lunch. We’ll provide hot drinks and cider!
We will have a limited supply of tools available. Please bring pruning shears, loppers, and hand saws.
If you’d like to attend, please RSVP to Sandi Dincki by October 13th, 802.660.0440 x113 or sandi@intervale.org.

Monday, October 4th at 6pm -- UVM Rowell Hall (Room 103): Sacred Seeds: Preserving Diversity and Healing Traditions
A special presentation by Ashley Glenn and Sara NewmarkThe World Health Organization estimates that 90% of the population of developing countries relies on medicinal herbs to meet primary health-care needs. Now, these herbal treasures are under attack, as overharvesting and global climate change threaten many medicinal herbs with extinction. Also endangered are the languages and healing traditions of indigenous cultures. Anthropologists believe that every two weeks a language disappears, a traditional culture comes to an end, and the collective herbal wisdom of a people vanishes. The Sacred Seeds Program at the Missouri Botanical Gardens is working to set up
innovative partnerships throughout the world to create opportunities for preserving knowledge, protecting environments and supporting living traditions. Innovative partnerships are the hallmark of this effort. The work of Brattleboro-based New Chapter, a widely respected producer, formulator, packager and distributor of organic whole-food nutrients and herbal formulations, will be highlighted
and one of the newest partnerships, the Abenaki Heritage Garden in Burlington’s Intervale will be introduced.
Ashley Glenn (William L. Brown Center - Missouri Botanical Garden) is the manager of the Sacred Seeds program, coordinating conservation and cultural preservation efforts on a local level worldwide.
For more information about the Sacred Seeds program, visit the web site!
Sara Newmark (Sustainability Manager at New Chapter, Brattleboro) works to ensure that all actions by New Chapter
live up to their high standards of ecological stewardship, from product sourcing and packaging, to philanthropic efforts
such as Sacred Seeds.
