Intervale Center General

Community

Community Support Makes It Work

It takes a village of supporters to ensure the Intervale’s success. Here farmers, Intervale Center board and staff, Healthy City youth, and community members gather at our celebration of the work of farmers.

Farmouse Reflection

Historic Calkins Farmstead

The farmhouse is reflected in the window of the Calkins Community Barn.

Horse Barn

A Farmstead for Public Events

In 2003 the horse barn, originally built in the 1860’s, was moved across Intervale Road to its home as part of the Calkins farmstead, the last operating dairy in Burlington. Now the barn is available for public use.

Headquarters

Restoration of Calkins Farmhouse

In early 2005 winter, we restored the bricks and foundation of the 1860’s Italianate building that was home to the last working dairy farming family in Burlington. This stately brick house now serves as our headquarters.

VHCB

Partnerships in Celebration of Conserved Land

The Calkins farmstead hosted the 25th anniversary celebration of the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board in the summer of 2007. This was particularly appropriate since VHCB had been one of the partners in funding our acquisition and protection of 200 acres of farm and conservation land previously owned by Burlington Electric Department.

Jessica Hyman

Public Information About Local Food System

The Intervale Center actively promotes community appreciation for local foods. Here Jessica Hyman tells Church Street pedestrians about our mission and about the value of strengthening our local food system.
